In the book Looking for Alaska by John Green the
protagonist named Pudge (miles) leaves for Culver Creek Boarding school in
Alabama on scholarship to find “the great perhaps”. He soon makes friends with
the colonel (Chip) and the beautiful Alaska. Miles evolves drastically,
engaged in cigarettes, alcohol and pranks on the school’s rich kids and
leadership. He is only affected negatively, however he does find his “Great
Perhaps”. He falls deeply in love with Alaska. Pudge and Alaska shared one
kiss, when it’s over she says, “to be continue?” A few hours later she is
dead. “like if someone lost his glasses and went to the glasses store and
they told him that the world had run out of glasses and he would just have to
do without.”
The book is being written in Pudge’s
point of view, which is through his own eyes in third person. But even though
he’s the one telling the story, the whole book revolves around Alaska and her
death. Part one of the book is the “days before” and part two is the “days
after” Alaska’s death. The book is moved along by the strong personalities of
each individual character in Looking for Alaska. John Green most likely
did this to have the reader become more attached to not just pudge, but to the
Colonel and Alaska as well.
